Our investment emphasis is on downstream companies that are already contributing to bringing solar into the mainstream energy supply, as well as new businesses that show a clear potential to do so.
"We're nuts and bolts people investing in nuts and bolts businesses," says co-founder Timothy Ball. "We might occasionally invest in technology companies and upstream manufacturers, but we are strongly operationally oriented and look at all prospective investments in those terms."
Mainstream intends to remain as technology-neutral as possible, i.e., to base its success not on any given photovoltaics breakthrough, but on the companies, services and products that accompany any renewable energy technology.
Because the founders of Mainstream Energy have backgrounds and expertise in photovoltaics (PV), the company focuses primarily on the PV sector. However, the firm actively considers downstream investments in solar concentrator, solar thermal, wind, biofuels and other viable renewable energy technologies as well.
